Nikki Thorpe is your Puppy School tutor in Bucks.
Take a look at Nikki’s pedigree:
Nikki’s passion for the canine-human relationship inspired her to work with Assistance Dog charities, as a dog trainer, in Bucks and beyond. Over a period of 20 years, she trained Assistance Dogs for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – a role she loved and which gave her the opportunity to train one of the first Dual Purpose dogs. Working alongside Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, she helped to create a life-changing partnership between a young Deafblind woman and her Dual Purpose Assistance Dog.
More recently, Nikki was delighted to be part of a pilot project with Dogs for Good as a School Dog Handler in a special needs secondary school in Buckinghamshire.
“The benefits that the School Dog, ‘Patience’ a Labrador/Retriever cross brought to the students was incredible: her presence led to more effective therapy sessions; supported greater access to the community and improved pupils’ attendance and willingness to learn and participate.”
Nikki has a passion for communication which led her to working for Sense – a Deafblind organisation where she went on to obtain her level 3 British Sign Language qualification and Deafblind Communicator Guide qualification.
More than two decades of dog ownership have given Nikki a good grounding in understanding dogs. She has a love for all breeds and has shared her life with Dobermans, Spaniels, Labradors and currently owns a Jack Russell Terrier and a Border Collie. She has experienced introducing babies to existing family dogs and introducing an active puppy into her family with her two boys aged 7yrs and 3yrs.
“I was very quickly well-versed in how one or other party would soon go off-script – usually the children!” Nikki brings the breadth of her experience and her passion for dogs to the classes and encourages the whole family to participate where possible.
Throughout her career, Nikki has always had great enjoyment with her dogs, competing in agility, flyball and more recently, embarking on scentwork training and local trials.
Nikki is a qualified Canine Massage Therapist enhancing her knowledge of canine anatomy and giving her a broader perspective on dogs’ wellbeing and behaviour.
